National Housing Conference 2017

Housing affordability has been one of the biggest issues of 2017 and the role of local government in this critical national issue has never been more important.

The National Housing Conference 2017, Australia’s largest affordable housing event, will examine many major issues relevant to local government policymakers, including land use planning, city deals, and homelessness issues.

With the Federal Government linking planning regulations reform to the increase of housing supply under the new National Housing and Homelessness Agreement, our Land use planning session will feature short presentations focussing on approaches such as inclusionary zoning and value capture to deliver real planning reform to help increase affordable housing supply.

The conference will also examine the Federal Government’s City Deals agenda which have affordable housing as a priority, and require commonwealth, state/territory and local governments to work closely together

Also of great concern to many local government areas across Australia is the issue of homelessness and the National Housing Conference will feature a range of sessions focussing on this important issue. These sessions will provide a wealth of knowledge for specialist homelessness services providers, policymakers, and allied practitioners working to improve homelessness and housing outcomes.

Finally, a dedicated session “Locally made: affordable housing and local government” will further examine housing issues from a local government perspective including case studies from councils in Victoria and NSW.

With an engaged public and significant momentum building, the National Housing Conference is an opportunity to examine these crucial issues and progress towards the policy changes necessary for Australia.

Convened by AHURI, in partnership with the NSW Department of Family and Community Services, the National Housing Conference runs from 29 November to 1 December 2017 at Sydney’s International Convention Centre.
