Victoria seeks feedback on local government reform
The Victorian Government has announced its intention to introduce the Local Government Bill 2019 into Parliament later this year, pledging to ‘improve democracy, accountability and service delivery’.
The State Government is seeking feedback on the proposed Reforms, which is designed to;
Simplify and clarify enrolments for voters in council elections
Introduce mandatory training for council election candidates and councillors
Cap electoral campaign donations and gifts
Allow for the dismissal of a councillor after a community-initiated Commission of Inquiry
Define standards of conduct to guide councillor behaviour and make dealing with councillor conduct issues faster and easier
Introduce a preference for single member wards to make councils more accountable.
