The Victorian Government has announced over $50 million in investment to ‘completely rebuild’ the St Kilda Pier area, promising to boost tourism, add more green space and preserve the area for generations.
Announced in the state’s forthcoming budget, the new works will see the pier rebuilt to curve out into the bay with a penguin viewing area and tiered seating.
The design will also protect the St Kilda penguin colony while providing locals and tourists with a better place to watch the little penguins when they waddle back to the rock homes after sunset.
The City of Port Phillip’s Mayor, Dick Gross, welcomed the announcement by the State Government.
"Our Council sought these commitments in the lead-up to the State election, so we are delighted both these important projects have been funded in the Victorian Budget 2019/20," Cr Gross said.
