First phase of WA review of Local Government Act under way

Submissions to the first stage of the Western Australian Government's review of the Local Government Act 1995 have been called for and are due by March 9.

the review aims to modernise the Act, reform parts of the Act that restrict the ability of local governments to deliver for the community and parts that have not kept pace with modern technology and community expectations.

Phase 1 of the review is looking at modernising local government, including

Electronic availability of information.

  • Meeting public expectations for accountability, including gift disclosures.

  • Meeting community expectations of standards, ethics and performance.

  • Building capacity through reducing red tape.

  • Regional subsidiaries.

The second phase will focus on positioning local government to deliver for the community, including:

  • Increasing participation and public confidence in local government elections.

  • Increasing community participation in local government decision-making.

  • Improving financial management, including through local government enterprises.

  • Building capacity through reducing red tape.
