McVeigh promoted to Minister for Local Government in Federal Cabinet reshuffle

Queensland Liberal National MP John McVeigh is the new Federal Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, following the re-shuffle of Cabinet in December.

Mr McVeigh takes over from Darren Chester, who had been acting in the portfolio since Senator Fiona Nash, the previous incumbent, resigned from Parliament in October for being in breach of Section 44 of the Constitution.

Nationals Leader Barnaby Joyce is the new Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, taking over from Mr Chester, who’d held responsibility for the portfolio since February 2016.

Dr McVeigh was the chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Regional Development and Decentralisation before being elevated to Cabinet.

The employment minister, Michaelia Cash, will become the minister for jobs and innovation, combining some elements of her current portfolio with Arthur Sinodinos’s innovation portfolio.

Deputy Nationals Leader Bridget McKenzie joins the Cabinet as Minister for Sport, Rural Health and Regional Communications.

David Littleproud will become the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources.
