Guide for local government to settling refugees

The Department of Social Services has released The Guide to Supporting Settlement in Regional Australia with the aim of helping local governments and councils better understand refugee issues, services that are available for refugees and what additional support they may require.
The Guide highlights the importance of local government in the settlement process, and outlines the factors that are important in building a welcoming community for refugees and the assistance that may be available to local governments and councils in achieving this from national and state governments.
It sets out the questions that need to be addressed in considering the needs of refugees, and the services and infrastructure they may need in settling into regional areas. A variety of examples of refugee friendly initiatives is provided.
