WA councillors and local government CEOs exempt from pay freeze
The Western Australian Premier, Mark McGowan, has announced that local government councillors and chief executives will be exempt from the pay freeze announced in May as a measure to control the State's budget deficit.
Mr McGowan had stated in May that the policy would affect all salaries determined by the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal, but this week he conceded that extending the freeze to local government councillors and chief executives could delay the legislation.
“However” he said, “these laws do send a signal to the SAT to be mindful of community expectations when setting local council salaries over the next four years.”
Mr McGowan said the legislation needed to be passed urgently to ensure a four-year pay freeze on the salaries of politicians, judges and senior public servants to rein in the state's budget deficit.
