Your Right to Know campaign reveals Tasmanian council GM expenses

The Mercury newspaper's 'Your Right to Know' campaign has found that the general managers of six southern Tasmanian councils - Brighton, Clarence, Glenorchy, Hobart, Huon Valley and Kingborough – have claimed nearly $65,000 on expenses in the last financial year.
The 'Your Right to Know' campaign was initiated three years ago by the Mercury to “look below the surface of all levels of government and to shine a particular spotlight on local government”.
In the survey on which the recent Mercury report was based, councils were asked to provide details of their general manager’s salary and expenses they have claimed on the council payroll. The six councils listed above obliged and provided the information, but the Derwent Valley Council instructed the Mercury to lodge a Right to Information request. The general managers of Glamorgan Spring Bay and Sorell and Tasman, which share the same GM, did not respond.
The Mercury report lists the information on each council, finding that most of the expenses incurred by general managers during the 2016-17 financial year were for dining, accommodation or airfares.
