NSW introduces drink container deposit scheme
The NSW Government has announced a new container deposit scheme (CDS), appointing global sensor-based solutions provider TOMRA, and Australian waste management company Cleanaway as the network operator for the scheme.
The CDS, scheduled to commence on December 1, will see approximately 800 reverse vending machines installed across the state, providing a 10c refund on the return of most empty beverage containers and contributing to the state's litter volume reduction target of 40% by 2020.
Announcing the scheme, Environment and Local Government Minister Gabrielle Upton said it was the biggest initiative to tackle litter in the state’s history.
TOMRA will provide technology, software and carry the investment for the technology, while Cleanaway will deliver the logistics, sorting of collected material and acting as broker for the related commodities.
Amendments have been made to the State Environmental Planning Policy to fast track the approval of low-impact container collection and sorting points.
The majority of the 500 collection points across the state will be in place by December 2017, with the remaining reverse vending machines set to be installed by February 2018.
